Buyer’s guide: brake blanking plugs and caps explained
What does a blanking cap do?
A blanking plug or cap seals a brake or clutch port, pipe end or hose that is not in use – for example a spare outlet on a master cylinder or T-piece, a removed pipe while you work, or a system being stored. It seals by seating against the flare seat of the port, in the same way a union clamps a pipe flare, so the thread must match exactly.
Step 1 – identify your thread (the most common mistake)
| Thread | Outside diameter (male part) | Threads | Typically found on |
|---|---|---|---|
| M10 x 1mm (this part) | 10mm approx | 1mm pitch (about 25 per inch) | Most European and Japanese cars, many later British cars and kit cars |
| M10 x 1.25mm | 10mm approx | 1.25mm pitch | Some older Italian and French cars (e.g. Fiat, Lancia) |
| 3/8″ x 24 UNF | 9.5mm approx | 24 per inch | Most British classics: MG, Triumph, Mini, Land Rover Series |
| M12 x 1mm | 12mm approx | 1mm pitch | Larger ports, some master cylinders and 1/4″ pipe |
Tip: M10 x 1 and 3/8″ UNF look almost the same and will start to screw together, then bind. M10 x 1 and M10 x 1.25 also look alike. Never force a fitting. Measure the male thread (10mm = M10, 9.5mm = 3/8″) and check the pitch with a thread gauge.
Step 2 – cap or plug?
- Female blanking cap (this part): thread on the inside – screws onto an M10 x 1 male port or hose end to close it.
- Male blanking plug: thread on the outside – screws into an M10 x 1 female port. See our EMS-A2D male plug.
How to fit – good practice
- Clean the male port and check the end is free of dirt.
- Start the cap by hand for several turns – it should turn freely. If it binds, stop and check the thread.
- Tighten with a 9/16″ or 14mm spanner until it seats firmly. Hold the hose with a second spanner so it does not twist.
- Check for leaks with the pedal pressed hard.
Safety: brakes are a safety-critical system. If you are not confident, have the work done or checked by a qualified mechanic.

FAQ
Will it fit a clutch hose end? Yes, where the hose end is an M10 x 1 male thread.
Is M10 x 1 the same as 3/8″ UNF? No. The threads are different and will bind. For 3/8″ UNF see our EMS-A1AB cap.
Which spanner do I need? The hex is 14.2mm A/F – a 9/16″ or 14mm spanner.
